Year 8 – Can Bolton become a Blue Zone?

Thursday 1 May 2025

As part of an ambitious cross-curricular project, Year 8 learners have been investigating the question: Can Bolton become a Blue Zone? Inspired by regions of the world where people regularly live beyond 100 in good health – known as Blue Zones – the project focused on three key lifestyle pillars identified in these areas: regular physical activity, balanced nutrition and strong social connections.

With these principles in mind, learners developed their knowledge by studying the science behind health and longevity in both PE and Science lessons. They explored what makes Blue Zones unique, from movement-rich lifestyles and plant-based diets to the power of community and purpose.

A key highlight of the project was a bespoke Fitness Testing Day at Bolton Arena, where learners took part in professional-standard physical assessments in a high-performance environment. The data collected from this experience will be used to create personalised FIFA-style fitness cards, giving each learner a visual and engaging snapshot of their physical strengths and areas for development – bringing data to life in a format they know and love.

We were delighted to host parents/carers and guest visitors today for our Project Trivium Showcase. Year 8 learners confidently presented their project journeys and inspired our audience with their commitment to long-term wellbeing with health and mindfulness pledges, such as: walking to school, eating more fruit and vegetables, or sharing meals with family and friends.

The pledges are now on display in a dedicated wellbeing garden on the school grounds, where learners walk past their promise every day, reinforcing the connection between intention and action. We are incredibly proud of the maturity and dedication shown by all learners involved. Thank you to everyone who attended our event and supported our learners.

Through this project, learners gained a deeper appreciation for the habits that lead to long, healthy lives and how these can be applied locally. With thanks to Bolton Arena for their support, this collaborative initiative not only enriched the curriculum but empowered our learners to take ownership of their wellbeing – and posed an exciting challenge for our wider community: Can Bolton become a Blue Zone?
