In the lead up to Women in Engineering Week, we were visited by ex-student and Mechanical Engineer Alex Richards from Network Rail. She discussed career routes in Engineering with the Year 9 and Year 10 and set an extraordinary Maths problem for top set students in Year 8 and Year 9. The extraordinary Maths problem combined skills from many areas of Maths including; metric and imperial unit conversion, volume, decimal calculations and more. I was so impressed with how our talented students embraced this challenge.

We were also lucky enough to build models of a train to run down a track without derailing. Such vehicles would be used to bring supplies down the track if there was flooding damage. Mr Whyatt and Miss Du’s Year 7 classes stole the show, managing to create the most stable and reliable vehicles out of all the classes all day. Will these students be our Engineers of the future?
