The contribution of the Specialism to improving Ladybridge High School (Post

designation and since September 2007)

Much work has been done in terms of accelerating the impact of the Specialism, as outlined

below.

Improving the characteristics of the school

  • Higher level of OSHL [out of school hours learning]

  • The School is linked to outside clubs and organisations such as Ladybridge Football and Bolton Harriers

  • The Physical Education department has developed significantly with evidence through the learning walks and KS3/GCSE results.

  • The Physical Education team leads inset training to the school and contributes to team building activities for the staff.

  • None specialists take PE clubs and teams which help increase participation and OSHL.

  • The PE department have assessment policies which are at the forefront of standardisation.

  • PE department constantly look at G&T with linked to rewards and extended provision e.g. Patterdale, the Arena and G&T workshops.

  • National journals have noted the change in school practice by mentioning excellent practice in ‘Raising the Game’

  • The school teams improve results year by year


There are more clubs and an increase in attendance of staff to fitness clubs and swimming


The star player reward trip is part of school life encouraging pupils to work hard and excel.


The PE department led from the front gaining an overall “good with aspects of

outstanding” for the learning walk

Insets, both whole school and core subjects, have been delivered to improve

contextual lessons linked to the specialism and access to networking with other schools to improve results and attendance


Extra KS4 leadership awards have been introduced within the OSHL to improve the characteristics of our students, looking at self esteem and the ECM agenda.

 

Perceptions of Ladybridge High School

  •  Increased pupil intake

  • SSCo Family Plan and evaluation has developed and improved

  • Feedback from our Primary partners is positive

  • Local clubs links and usage of facilities has improved

  • Communication/Inset with teaching staff is more frequent

  • Open evening has improved attendance

Community group working on social behaviour in the neighbourhood has had an impact.

A decrease in vandalism and an increase in uptake at the Friday night sports

event run by Ladybridge PE staff.


Sports council in school and sports captains have ensured pupil voice is heard.
Pupils choosing activities and even helping with 2008 KS3 curriculum.

 

Partnership targets on PESSCAL target have all finally been met and new ones set to take policies and initiatives forward.


SERCO have linked with the school and are developing and moving forward with the MUGGA and extra help with OSHL and UFA


Dance groups and netball groups led by ours students in the community are attended by other students from the local community.

 

Improving achievement and standards of the students

Sports Leaders UK level 1 increased numbers and always been successful 100% pass rate.

PE improved practice on AfL, ICT, levelness and theory lessons evidenced in learning walks and HMI report

  • Rewards through sport have helped improve attainment and attendance figures

  • An increase in NGB awards contributes to leadership qualities and organisation

  • An increase in KS4 participation has helped improve results

  • MFL, History and Science are using the specialism to improve motivation in students and therefore helped attainment

  • Assessment in PE is tracked from year 6 to year 11 and shows excellent CVA scores

  • Shrinking the syllabus of science and PE with cross curricular links has helped attainment and coursework times

 

Rota 4 has seen subjects in ICT, Maths and MFL utilise the specialism to impact on learning, extension work and commitment to homework clubs.


Curriculum mapping to share ideas e.g. orienteering in PE is on at the same time as grid referencing in geography, science and fit for life are being taught at the same time as fitness modules in PE, Maths have used data collection from the athletics results in PE, English have used sports leaders UK students to evidence presentation work.


Increased NGB awards in life saving and water polo


The Maths clinic has seen grades of coursework improve

Science cross links where the specialism staff help deliver and set up schemes of work with pre tests illustrating higher than normal and a clear improvement in attainment.

 

Improving the personal well being of the students and staff

  • The ‘Out of School Hours’ timetable has improved and is more diverse

  • Staff fitness clubs have been successful in aerobics, fitness suite and kick boxing

  • Insets on brain gym, water in lessons, oxygen and work effectiveness, staff stress have

  • made staff more aware of benefits to them and their classes

  • Our Spectrum canteen has helped pupils eat the right foods and understand the right foods to eat

  • 2 new Fitness suites used in OSHL and curriculum and cross curricular, SEN,

  • behavioural issues and statemented children can access exercise in all lessons

  • Whole school GCSE PE ensures all students have a detailed understanding of health,

  • training and fitness, all completing training programmes and dietary needs.

  • Our ‘University of the First Age’ programme has continued to improve both in attendance and diversity

  • Preferred learning styles audit and kinaesthetic training has helped develop pupils understanding of personal development personal styles.

  • NGB awards influencing future careers and choices

  • Star Player and understanding behaviour has contributed to the self esteem of young adults and concentrated on “silent performers”

 

We ensure that inset work is translated into lessons e.g. Water in lessons, Brain Gym, kinaesthetic plans


The national Healthy Schools Award has been achieved


PSHE, Science, food tech promote understanding in health and fitness with heads of department ensuring projects are in place


Healthy food and exercise clinics for cohorts take place on Tuesday pm

 

Improving the quality of provision

  • Learning walks and HMI indicated PE as flag ship department in T&L, assessment, resources, ICT, AfL, VAK due to improved resources, staffing and training through specialism.

  • Good PE KS3 levels over the 3 years with constant upward trend.

  • Whole School GCSE has helped improve choice of top 8 CVA subjects

  • OAA at KS3 has improved the self esteem and curriculum offered to pupils.

  • Kinaesthetic inset and resources have helped develop the number of good lessons

  • Multiple intelligence survey helped with lesson planning and standard of levels

  • Science and PE team teaching to cross over role models, understanding and motivation for the students

  • PE staff teach science and deliver kinaesthetic lessons and motivate students

  • SSCo and sports coach have worked and changed improving on curriculum and T&L in feeder schools

  • Sport Leaders UK and sports diploma on offer

  • Improved attendance in OSHL

  • G&T outreach through sport e.g. Patterdale


Sporting context link in other subjects and G&T to improve motivation and attainment through inset training and improved access to resources.

More VAK lessons across the curriculum


PE resources are used more in other subjects e.g. fitness suite, heart monitors


SSCo work on curriculum and T&L has come to its peak and extended work is now in place.

Wider community courses e.g. coaching and refereeing are offered by the school


We now have more rewards from sport in other subjects

 

Improving the impact on the community

  • Our SSCo evaluations have been successful and develop year on year

  • Club links have developed with hockey, football, netball, athletics, rugby league, rounders

  • Our Sports Coach and primary feeders have worked very closely and improved T&L, motivation of teachers, enjoyment for pupils

  • The MUGGA and the participation opportunities have improved and numbers have accelerated

  • Our Sports Leaders UK level 1 in primaries has helped improve attainment at primary level.

  • We have improved facilities in rugby, football, MUGGA, pool

  • Festivals are held at Ladybridge High School

  • NGB awards are enhancing the community e.g. Life Guarding

 

Our SSCo family plan has really moved forward with extra work put in with the PDM to ensure we are at the heart of all initiatives and our feeder schools receive ample funding


More outside OSHL takes place in the evening and weekends for our pupils and the community with club links with SERCO, dance clubs and cricket nets.


Improve facilities include cricket. Gymnastics has already set up extra coaching sessions for the community.


Friday night sessions for the community has helped reduce crime through sport

Work with local residents has helped us to understand the community’s needs and issues.


Residents and parents are involved in helping after school rounders coaching and cycling.
