Welcome to the Design and Technology Department where pupils combine practical and technological skills with creative thinking to design and make products and systems that meet human needs. They learn practical skills to think creatively, solve problems, to work individually and in teams.
Design and Technology encourages pupils to communicate and model original and innovative design ideas visually, orally and in writing, using ICT as appropriate. During focused practical tasks, and in particular when analysing products, pupils imagine new approaches to designing and making, learning independently and with others.
Pupils analyse and evaluate existing products and solutions. They research into materials and technical information about the product. When responding to briefs they sift information, judge its relevance and value. They use reasoned arguments and evidence to support their conclusion. Pupils evaluate and modify their design ideas to ensure their product meets its specification.
Pupils are encouraged to think creatively, to generate, develop and model ideas. They discuss possibilities for new designs during group designing sessions to extend their own thinking. When they encounter technical problems they are encouraged to try out alternatives.
Pupils work in teams to solve practical problems. They generate and communicate a range of ideas in different ways. Working together can help pupils reach agreement on criteria for the success of designs. Pupils are encouraged to give constructive feedback concerning others` ideas.
As pupils plan and organise activities and then make their designs they are given every opportunity to take responsibility and to show initiative, commitment and perseverance. Pupils can experiment with ideas, materials techniques and technologies.
Pupils learn to solve problems individually and in teams. Pupils are given opportunities to influence others, to negotiate in order to come up with a workable design. Pupils propose practical ways forward as they evaluate which materials, tools, cad/cam are the most appropriate to use.
Pupils judge the qualities of other people’s products and set goals for developing their work. During making their product they constantly review their progress and modify product where needed.
