Mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems. It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education therefore provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

The mathematics curriculum at Ladybridge is designed to ensure that all students:

·    have a fluent understanding of the fundamental principles of mathematics. Students will practise a variety of challenges with increasing complexity, ensuring they develop a true conceptual understanding and are able to recall and apply knowledge whatever the circumstance.

·    are able to build the skill set to allow them to reason mathematically through conjecture, generalisation and developing an argument, then moving onto the use of mathematical language to justify and formulate formal proof.

·    become able to solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of problems. We have built in opportunities to consolidate learning using problem solving and independent learning to ensure that students work on routine and non-routine problems on a regular basis to build perseverance and determination to seek solutions.

True success in mathematics, and therefore later life, comes through deep understanding, which can only be achieved when students are given the opportunity to explore mathematics and learn to appreciate its importance and beauty.
