Welcome to the Geography department where we aim to provide an innovative and stimulating learning environment which embeds a real sense of wonder and awe about places. We help young people to make sense of a complex and dynamically changing world. Geography explains where places are, how places and landscapes are formed, how people and their environment interact, and how a diverse range of economies, societies and environments are interconnected. It builds on students’ own experiences to investigate places at all scales, from the personal to the global.
Students learn to think spatially and use maps, visual images and new technologies, including geographical information systems (GIS), to obtain, present and analyse information. As a department we inspire students to become global citizens by exploring their own place in the world, their values and their responsibilities to other people, to the environment and to the sustainability of the planet.
In Key Stage 3, we make use of our local area by promoting the interaction between the physical and human environment in the Middlebrook valley and the Rivington area of Bolton.  Numeracy and statistical analysis become the focus.  Additionally, in Year 9 students visit a National Park such as The Peak District or the Lake District to study the physical environment and aspects of tourism and related conflicts. Students are able to apply Ordinance Survey map skills and use other practical equipment in a safe and confident learning environment. In Key Stage 4, students investigate urban and physical environments such as Salford Quays, Middlebrook Retail and Leisure Park and local field studies investigating the physical environment and how it is being managed in sustainable ways.  For the previous eight years, there has been a combined Humanities trip to France where we study the Somme Battlefields of WWI and the urban geography of Paris and Disneyland Resort.  This will now run biannually, subject to safety in Europe.
