Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

Welcome to the Learning Support Department. Our aim is to support our Ladybridge students to enable them to develop the fundamental skills that are required in today’s society. Our support and guidance aims to enable students to have an enjoyable and meaningful learning experience whilst developing their independence, confidence and self-esteem. We are strongly focussed on supporting our students to achieve their challenging targets.

The department is committed to providing wide ranging opportunities for all our young people. Students with Communication & Interaction difficulties, Cognition &Learning difficulties, Social, Emotional & Mental Health difficulties and Sensory & Physical Difficulties will require additional support at times in their schooling. The school aims to track these students’ progress as effectively as possible in order to ensure that any necessary intervention is swift and addresses specific needs. Individual difficulties brought to our attention by parents, students and teachers will be dealt with in a supportive and effective manner.

We have developed strong relationships with the SEND Support Services in Bolton and regularly meet with them to plan the way forward for students on their caseloads. Details of all of Bolton’s support services can be found on the Local Offer website

The Children and Families Act was passed in March 2014, reforming provisions for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. The Learning Support Department has implemented change to meet the needs of the 0-25 SEND Code of Practice. Parents are encouraged to contact the Bolton Information Advisory Service for SEND where individually appointed advisors will guide them through the changes to SEND, Education, Health and Care Plans and any other area of SEND in which they require support.

The Learning Support Department has a dedicated area, The Grace Centre, to support the learning and progress of all students with SEND as well as meeting the needs of students who are experiencing short term difficulties which affect their ability to learn effectively.

The Learning Support Department is strongly committed to the professional development of its staff. The qualifications and experience amongst our current staff can be seen in the SEND Information Report. We are very proud of our excellent track record of developing all of our SEND staff who have used experience, skills and knowledge gained at Ladybridge to develop their careers –Justin is a police officer, Danielle and Darren are Maths teachers, Rebecca is a SENCo in a special school, Leanne is a Science teacher, Damian is a Department Leader of PE and Dominic is a Head Teacher.

We are also incredibly proud of the achievements of students who have flourished in adulthood. Here are some examples of what our previous students are doing now – Stan is studying Painting and Decorating at college, Sana is a qualified primary school teacher, Chris is a section leader at Tesco, Saif is working in a car dealership and Lewis is teaching and has his own sports coaching business. The vast majority of students who have received guidance and support from the Learning Support Department go on to study at college. Supported transition to college is encouraged and has been developed through close liaison with post-16 providers.
